| PHILADELPHIA -- The rest of the 2016 season will be spent evaluating what the future may hold for the Philadelphia Phillies.And that makes sense for a team in the waning moments of another losing season.On Monday night, with a 6-2 decision over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies surpassed their win total from 2015 by earning their 64th victory of the season.I never thought Id be happy to get a 64th win, Philadelphia manager Pete Mackanin said, but it makes me happy at this point.What also made him happy Monday night was the play of rookie outfielder Roman Quinn, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a stolen base -- all firsts for his two-game-old career. Quinn and catcher Jorge Alfaro, both called up Sunday from Double-A Reading, will get a chance to showcase themselves for the future. Both 23-year-olds are among the teams top prospects.Alfaro, who pinch-hit and had an infield single in his debut Monday, likely will get his first start behind the plate Tuesday night when the the Pirates and Phillies continue their four-game series.Theyre not going to be able to establish themselves, but theyre going to really make a good first impression and thats the best they can do, Mackanin said of Alfaro and Quinn.Should Alfaro get the start Tuesday, he would be catching right-hander Alec Asher (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who pitched well in his first major league start of the year Thursday in Washington.Asher, back after serving an 80-game suspension for the use of performance-enhancing drugs, tossed six scoreless innings against the Nationals, yielding just two hits and one walk.While Asher is looking to make his case to be in the teams long-term plans, his Tuesday mound opponent has already succeeded on that count.Right-hander Ivan Nova (12-6, 4.13 ERA) has been extremely effective since joining the Pirates last month, even though the team has been plummeting.In seven starts, since he was acquired from the New York Yankees, Nova is 5-0 with a 2.53 ERA and 0.93 walks-and-hits-per-inning-pitched ratio. His last time out, he threw a complete-game six-hitter in a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.Nova has made one career start against Philadelphia, when he pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings in a win for the Yankees last year.The loss Monday knocked Pittsburgh (69-73) six games back of the final wild-card spot in the National League.
